Successful Model of Integrated Research on Aging
First of all, CCU has developed a successful model of integrated research on aging. It has developed top-notch researches in ‘elder common chronic disease prevention’, ‘health care’, ‘mental care’, and ‘social support network’, basing on the fundamental concept of ‘elder-centered’ researches on aging. The present proposal is based on this already existent successful model of research integration. It can be regarded as the first integrated and comprehensive large-scale research on aging in Taiwan. The innovative researches by our research team, with deep concern for humanity and social support, constitute a unified research project involving the interweaving research areas of technology innovation, clinical application, popularization of good practices, and the impacts of policy and law. Through many years of hard team working, we finally successfully set up an operating system. Based on this system, we are able to be devoted to integrating more areas such as the researches of cognition, policy and law, and education in our interdisciplinary researches on aging.
The Operating System That Integrates Humanities with Social Science, and Technology Development at both CCU and NCKU.
The Center for the Humanities and Social Sciences at CCU will integrate the research topics from different colleges at CCU and NCKU. The Center will thus serve as the platform for team members from different research areas on both campuses. We integrate the area of laws and regulations with technology research and development, cognitive research, policy research, and education learning to reach two goals: understanding and application. Understanding means that we understand the mental state, cognition and behaviors of the elders, their feeling and thinking, needs, and the ways for communication and their adaptability to the new technology and changing environment. Application means that the elders are able to actively participate in social affairs and community activities. The government and industry are also able to look for new directions for the development of technology and industries in an aging society.
Establish the Researches on Aging Society with Cultural Characteristics in Taiwan
The researches on aging society have been done in the western countries for years, and they have established their respective systems. However, the social policies of one country cannot be independent of social and cultural customs. The proposed Center will investigate how the Confucianist ethics and traditional Taiwan cultural values can be implemented to strike a balance point between the family morality in modern society and the needs of the elders. Our main goal is to design a ‘socialized in-home care’ system which can be successfully supported by the government, community, family, and each family member. We will collect information on aging society systematically and establish an Aging Society Research Corpora of Taiwan. Moreover, we will exchange findings with the researchers from western countries in the hope that our research findings are useful for policy-planning in other countries.
